Formal ontology is the systematic study of the types of entities and relations making up the domains of interest represented in modern information systems. The conference encourages submission of high quality, not previously published results on both theoretical issues and practical advancements. FOIS 2023 will have distinct tracks for foundational issues, ontology applications and methods, and domain ontologies. FOIS aims to be a nexus of interdisciplinary research and communication for researchers from many domains engaging with formal ontology. Common application areas include conceptual modeling, database design, knowledge engineering and management, software engineering, organizational modeling, artificial intelligence, robotics, computational linguistics, the life sciences, bioinformatics and scientific research in general, geographic information science, information retrieval, library and information science, as well as the Semantic Web. Important dates =============== - Paper submission deadline: 31 January 2023 - Author rebuttal period: March 24-31, 2023 (tentative) - Notifications: April 10, 2023 (tentative) - Camera-ready papers: May 1, 2023 - Onsite conference: July 17-20, 2023 - Virtual conference: September 18-20, 2023 The submission deadline for workshops will be after the notifications to allow authors to submit a revised version of rejected papers to any of the conference workshops if the paper topics are appropriate for this workshop. Location ======== FOIS 2023 will consist of a physical meeting and a virtual meeting: An in-person only meeting in Sherbrooke, Quebec from July 17 to 20, 2023 that will be very much like a traditional conference with keynotes, regular talks, workshops and tutorials and plenty of social and networking opportunities. This part will not have a remote participation option, but we plan on recording selected talks (e.g. keynotes). The main conference will be from July 17 to 19 and workshops and tutorials will be held mostly on July 20. This will be followed by an online part to be held from September 18 to 20, 2023 that offers an opportunity for presentation and discussion of additional papers that were not presented at the physical meeting in Sherbrooke. To plan for this two-part event, authors must at the time of submission indicate their preference and constraints for presenting either on site in Sherbrooke or virtually. Acceptance will be either for in-person presentation or for online presentation, at which time authors can no longer change the modality. Since the numbers of in-person and online presentations are limited, we encourage authors to be as flexible as possible to maximize your chance of paper acceptance. Any interest in ICFCA workshop on Jupyter notebooks?

Dear All, following up on the ICFCA Call for workshops, I am wondering whether anybody is interested in co-organising or participating in a workshop on using Jupyter notebooks for FCA. Notebooks provide possibilities for sharing and exchanging data and algorithms, even combining algorithms written in different programming languages and for writing teaching materials and other documentation. I know that some FCA people are already using them, but I am not sure how much interest there would be in a workshop on this topic. We invite proposals for both **full- and half-day workshops/tutorial** in current and emerging topics in (or related to) Formal Concept Analysis. The workshop and tutorials provide an opportunity to discuss novel topics in an interactive atmosphere. They can concentrate in-depth on research topics, but can also be devoted to application issues. ICFCA 2023 will be a hybrid conference with a strong emphasis on on-site interaction. Therefore all contributors are required to present their work locally in Kassel. # Duration & format We welcome both full- and half-day workshop/tutorial proposals. We would like to encourage proposers to aim for a program that is both varied and interesting. For workshops, especially where the format is concerned, we would like you to think about ways of going beyond the usual list of presentations of accepted papers. Another way of extending the usual format is to include a specific challenge problem that can be addressed by the workshop participants, with a dedicated challenge session in the workshop program. Note, however, that the challenge should be only one of the components of the workshop, targeting a problem which is specific to the workshop topic(s). # Combined Tutorial & Workshop Especially for a relatively novel but rapidly maturing topic, giving an introduction of the state-of-the-art may go beyond the scope of an invited presentation. In this case, a half day tutorial followed by a half day workshop could be a good format. # Guidelines for proposals When proposing a workshop or a tutorial, please provide (at least) the following information: - A brief description of - the specific issues that will be addressed, - the reasons why the workshop/tutorial is of interest in these times, - the main research areas involved, - and what the workshop/tutorial will add to the conference (e.g., do you expect papers of a theme that would not fit the main conference?). - For workshops, - a draft of the Call for Papers, including information on accepted formats (e.g., regular papers, extended abstracts, oral-only presentations of relevant recently published or submitted contributions, etc.) - and expected format of the workshop (e.g., invited talks, presentations, poster sessions, panel discussions, challenge sessions, or other ideas for ensuring an interactive atmosphere). - In the case of a combined tutorial-workshop, please clearly indicate the format. - Any special requirements regarding logistics (e.g., poster stands, audio equipment), if applicable. # Submission For applying or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the Program Chairs Domingo López Rodríguez and Dominik Dürrschnabel: icfca2023(a)lists.cs.uni-kassel.de. Ideal IUI submissions should address practical HCI challenges using machine intelligence and discuss both computational and human-centric aspects of such methodologies, techniques, and systems. The theme for this year will be Resilience, covering a wide variety of topics, such as COVID-19 recovery, organizational cyber resilience, economic growth and stability, climate change recovery, intelligent user interface resilience, and similars. While we encourage submissions related to this theme, the scope of the conference is not limited to the theme only. As always, contributions to IUI are expected to be supported by rigorous evidence appropriate to the claims (e.g., user study, system evaluation, computational analysis). Contributions are welcome from all relevant arenas, including academia, industry, government, and non-profit organizations. The goal of the workshops is to provide a venue for presenting research on focused topics of interest and an informal forum to discuss research questions and challenges. Tutorials are designed to provide fundamental knowledge and experience on topics related to intelligent user interfaces, and the intersection between Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Note: We encourage you to contact the chairs with your ideas (wt2023(a)iui.acm.org), and work together to prepare an exciting proposal. We encourage proposals for a wide range of workshops and tutorials, including but not limited to: - "Mini-conferences" on specialized topics; such workshops may have their own paper submission and review processes. - "Late breaking work" meetings; such workshops usually have a lighter review process (e.g. based on abstracts only). - "Hands-on" workshops around a specific problem or topic that may wish to ask participants to submit a position statement. - "Project centric" workshops that may be closely related to the scope of an existing large scale (e.g. NSF, EU, etc. funded) project. - "Mini-competitions", challenges, or hackathons around selected topics with individual or team participation. - Tutorials on a specific topic relevant to IUI; for example, methods and approaches in HCI and/or AI, specific techniques or algorithms to develop intelligent user interfaces, etc. Workshops and tutorials will be held on the first day of the conference. We invite submissions of proposals for full-day and half-day workshops or tutorials. Proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the workshop and tutorial chairs. Workshops with few submissions by Wednesday, 11 January, 2023 may be canceled, shortened, merged with other workshops, or otherwise restructured. The organizers of accepted workshops and tutorials are responsible for producing a call for participation and publicizing it, such as distributing the call to relevant newsgroups and electronic mailing lists, and especially to potential audiences from outside the IUI conference community. Workshop and tutorial organizers will maintain their own website with information about the workshop or tutorial and the ACM IUI 2023 web site will refer to this website. The workshop organizers will coordinate the paper solicitation, collection, and review process. A workshop and tutorials summary will be included in the ACM Digital Library for ACM IUI 2023, and we will separately publish a joint workshop proceedings for accepted workshop submissions (through CEUR or similar). Ideal IUI submissions should address practical HCI challenges using machine intelligence and discuss both computational and human-centric aspects of such methodologies, techniques, and systems. The theme for this year will be Resilience, covering a wide variety of topics, such as COVID-19 recovery, organizational cyber resilience, economic growth and stability, climate change recovery, intelligent user interface resilience, and similars.
